A note on the inspiration behind this work :

I’m not sure exactly when I read this quote by Vonnegut, but I know that it was around the same time I started this weaving because it was knocking around in my subconscious the whole time I worked on this piece.

Vonnegut “tells his wife he's going out to buy an envelope:

“Oh, she says, well, you're not a poor man. You know, why don't you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet? And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I'm going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope. I meet a lot of people. And see some great looking babies. And a fire engine goes by. And I give them the thumbs up. And I'll ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don't know. The moral of the story is - we're here on Earth to fart around. And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And what the computer people don't realize, or they don't care, is we're dancing animals. You know, we love to move around. And it's like we're not supposed to dance at all anymore."

There’s a lot to unpack here, but for me, I’m obsessed with this notion that we’re here to fart around.  It makes me happy.  Making abstract art is, to me, a lot like dancing.  I like to let the wool move and sway and twist and turn.  Sure I have an idea in mind when I begin, but most of time it feels like the finished design finds me more than I “create” it.  I think that’s the best part of weaving, it’s a form of movement that allows me the joy of tapping into that dancing animal.

PS.  I named this piece lichen because that’s the first thing that popped into my head when I stood back and looked at it.  Can you see the resemblance?

Made from hand felted and woven Australian sheep's wool, this is a statement piece that is ideal for large spaces.  It provides wonderful warmth and texture and can also be very useful for sound absorption.

I love working on large scale pieces, so please don't hesitate to get in touch for a special commission if you love this piece, but would like it produced with some variations or adjustments.  Custom work is not eligible for return.
